Il riduzionismo è una posizione filosofica che ritiene che un sistema complesso non sia altro che la somma delle sue parti e che un suo resoconto può essere ridotto ai conti di singoli costituenti. Si può dire di oggetti, fenomeni, spiegazioni, teorie e significati. Il riduzionismo riflette fortemente una certa prospettiva sulla causalità. In un quadro riduzionista, i fenomeni che possono essere spiegati completamente in termini di relazioni tra altri fenomeni più fondamentali, sono chiamati epifenomania. Spesso c'è un'impresa che l'epifenomeno non esercita alcuna agenzia causale sui fenomeni fondamentali che lo spiegano. Il riduzionismo non preclude l'esistenza di ciò che potrebbe essere chiamato fenomeni emergenti, ma implica la capacità di comprendere completamente questi fenomeni in termini di processi da cui sono composti. Questa comprensione riduzionista è molto diversa da quella di solito implicita dal termine «emergenza», che in genere intende che ciò che emerge è più che la somma dei processi da cui emerge. Il riduzionismo religioso cerca generalmente di spiegare la religione bollendolo a determinate cause non religiose.
