Un parente relativo contrassegna una clausola relativa; Ha lo stesso referente nella clausola principale di una frase che la clausola relativa modifica. Un esempio è la parola inglese che nella frase "Questa è la casa che Jack ha costruito", qui il relativo pronome che segnala la clausola relativa "che Jack costruì", che modifica il nome della casa nella frase principale. Questo si riferisce alla casa nella clausola principale e collega due frasi immaginate "Questa è una casa" e "Jack costruì la casa", dove la casa è la stessa in entrambe le frasi. Non tutti i casi della parola che sono relativi pronomi. Nel fornire un legame tra una clausola subordinata e una clausola principale, un pronome relativo è simile in funzione di una congiunzione subordinante. A differenza di una congiunzione, tuttavia, un pronome relativo non rappresenta semplicemente la clausola subordinata, ma svolge anche il ruolo di un sostantivo all'interno di tale clausola.
