La resistività elettrica è una proprietà intrinseca che quantifica quanto fortemente un dato materiale si opponga al flusso della corrente elettrica. Una bassa resistenza indica un materiale che consente facilmente il movimento della carica elettrica. La resistenza è comunemente rappresentata dalla lettera greca ρ. L'unità SI di resistività elettrica è l'ohm¹metro anche se altre unità come ohm º centimetro sono anche in uso. Ad esempio, se un cubo solido di 1 m × 1 m × 1 m ha contatti in lamiera su due facce opposte e la resistenza tra questi contatti è di 1 Ω, allora la resistenza del materiale è di 1 Ω⋅m. La conduttività elettrica o la conduttività specifica è la reciproca resistenza elettrica e misura la capacità del materiale di condurre una corrente elettrica. È comunemente rappresentato dalla lettera greca σ, ma anche κ o γ sono usati occasionalmente. La sua unità SI è il siemens per metro e l'unità CGSE è secondaria reciproca.
