Un respirometro è un dispositivo utilizzato per misurare il tasso di respirazione di un organismo vivente misurando il tasso di scambio di ossigeno e / o di anidride carbonica. Essi permettono di studiare come fattori come l'età, le sostanze chimiche o l'effetto della luce influenzano il tasso di respirazione. I respirometri sono progettati per misurare la respirazione sia a livello di un animale intero o a livello cellulare. Questi campi sono coperti rispettivamente da respirometria animale e cellulare intero. Un semplice respirometro di pianta intero progettato per misurare l'assorbimento di ossigeno o rilascio di CO2 è costituito da un contenitore sigillato con il campione vivo insieme a una sostanza che assorbe l'anidride carbonica emessa durante la respirazione, come pellet di calce di sodio o cotone imbevuto di idrossido di potassio. L'assorbimento di ossigeno viene rilevato mediante manometria. In genere viene utilizzato un manometro a tubo U, che mostra direttamente la differenza di pressione tra il contenitore e l'atmosfera. Come un organismo prende O2, genera una quantità proporzionale di CO2, ma tutta la CO2 viene assorbita dalla calce di sodio. Pertanto, tutta la goccia di pressione nella camera può essere attribuita alla goccia di pressione parziale O2 nel contenitore.
