Il ribosoma è una macchina molecolare grande e complessa, trovata in tutte le cellule viventi, che serve come luogo primario della sintesi proteica biologica. I ribosomi associano gli aminoacidi insieme nell'ordine specificato dalle molecole RNA messenger. I ribosomi sono costituiti da due componenti principali: la piccola sottosonda ribosomale che legge l'RNA e la grande sottounità che unisce gli aminoacidi per formare una catena di polipeptidi. Ogni sottounita è composta da una o più molecole RNA ribosomali e una varietà di proteine. I ribosomi e le molecole associate sono anche noti come l'apparato di traslazione. La sequenza di DNA che codifica per una proteina può essere copiata molte volte in catene di messaggistica RNA di una sequenza simile. I ribosomi possono legarsi ad una catena di mRNA e utilizzarlo come un template per determinare la corretta sequenza di aminoacidi in una particolare proteina. Gli amminoacidi vengono selezionati, raccolti e portati al ribosoma mediante RNA di trasferimento, che entrano in una parte del ribosoma e si legano alla catena del messaggero RNA. Gli aminoacidi associati vengono quindi collegati tra loro da un'altra parte del ribosoma.
