Il ridotto sistema di calcolo delle istruzioni, o RISC, è una strategia di progettazione della CPU basata sull'intuizione che il set di istruzioni semplificato offre prestazioni più elevate se combinato con un'architettura a microprocessore in grado di eseguire tali istruzioni usando meno cicli di microprocessore per istruzione. Un computer basato su questa strategia è un computer ridotto di istruzioni, chiamato anche RISC. L'architettura opposta è chiamata computazione complessa di istruzioni, cioè CISC. Molti suggerimenti sono stati fatti per una definizione precisa di RISC, ma il concetto generale è quello di un sistema che utilizza un piccolo e altamente ottimizzato set di istruzioni, piuttosto che un insieme più specificato di istruzioni spesso trovato in altri tipi di architetture. Un altro elemento comune è che i sistemi RISC utilizzano l'architettura load / store, in cui la memoria viene normalmente accessibile solo tramite istruzioni specifiche, piuttosto che accessibili come parte di altre istruzioni come aggiungere. Sebbene alcuni sistemi degli anni '60 e '70 siano stati identificati come precursori di RISC, la versione moderna del design risale agli anni '80.
