Romulus / rɒmjʉləs / e Remus / riːməs / sono i fratelli gemelli ei personaggi centrali del mito della fondazione di Roma. La madre è Rhea Silvia, figlia di Numitor, re di Alba Longa. Prima della loro concezione, il fratello di Numitor Amulius prende il potere, uccide gli eredi maschi di Numitor e le forze Rhea Silvia per diventare una Vergine Vestale, giurata alla castità. Rhea Silvia concepisce i gemelli del dio Mars, o del demi-dio Hercules. Una volta che i gemelli sono nati, Amulius li ha abbandonati per morire nel fiume Tevere. Sono salvati da una serie di interventi miracolosi: il fiume li porta alla sicurezza, un lupo li trova e le immerge, e un picchio li alimenta. Un pastore e sua moglie li trovano e li incoraggiano alla virilità, come semplici pastori. I gemelli, ancora ignoranti delle loro vere origini, rivelano essere leader naturali. Ognuno acquista molti seguaci. Quando scoprono la verità della loro nascita, uccidono Amuli e restituiscono Numitor al suo trono. Piuttosto che aspettare di ereditare Alba Longa, scelgono di fondare una nuova città. Romolo vuole trovare la nuova città sulla Collina dei Palatini; Remus preferisce la collina Aventina.
