Una rubrica è una parola o una sezione di testo tradizionalmente scritta o stampata in inchiostro rosso per enfasi. La parola deriva dal latino: rubrica, che significa ocra rossa o gesso rosso, e origina in manoscritti illuminati medievali del XIII secolo o precedenti. In queste lettere rosse sono stati usati per evidenziare capitali iniziali, intestazioni di sezione e nomi di significato religioso, una pratica nota come rubricazione, che era una tappa separata nella produzione di un manoscritto. Rubrica può anche significare l'inchiostro o la vernice rossa utilizzati per fare rubriche o il pigmento usato per farlo.
