Saturnalia
Saturnalia era un'antica festa romana in onore della divinità Saturno, tenutasi il 17 dicembre del calendario giuliano e successivamente ampliata con feste fino al 23 dicembre. La festa è stata celebrata con un sacrificio presso il Tempio di Saturno, nel Foro Romano, e un banchetto pubblico, seguito da dono regalo privato, festa continua e un'atmosfera di carnevale che ha rovesciato le norme sociali romane: il gioco è stato permesso e i maestri hanno fornito Servizio per i loro schiavi. Il poeta Catullo lo chiamò "il meglio dei giorni". Nella mitologia romana, Saturn era una divinità agricola che si diceva di essere regnante nel mondo nell'era dell'oro, quando gli esseri umani godono della bontà spontanea della terra senza lavoro in uno stato di egalitarianismo sociale.
