È anche spesso limitato a quei rami di studio che cercano di spiegare i fenomeni dell'universo materiale. Nei secoli XVII e XVIII gli scienziati cercavano sempre di formulare conoscenze in termini di leggi della natura come le leggi di moto di Newton.
