Uno scintillometro è un dispositivo scientifico utilizzato per misurare piccole fluttuazioni dell'indice di rifrazione dell'aria causato da variazioni di temperatura, umidità e pressione. È costituito da un trasmettitore ad onda ottica o radio e un ricevitore a entrambe le estremità di un percorso di propagazione atmosferica. Il ricevitore rileva e valuta le fluttuazioni dell'intensità del segnale trasmesso, chiamato scintillazione. La grandezza delle fluttuazioni dell'indice di rifrazione viene solitamente misurata in termini di Cn ^ 2, la costante di struttura delle fluttuazioni dell'indice di rifrazione, che è l'ampiezza spettrale delle fluttuazioni dell'indice di rifrazione nel sottrange inerziale della turbolenza. Alcuni tipi di scintillometri, come gli scintillometri a sfasato, possono anche misurare la scala interna delle fluttuazioni dell'indice di rifrazione, che è la dimensione minima delle alterazioni del sottrange inerziale. Gli scintillometri consentono inoltre di misurare il trasferimento di calore tra la superficie terrestre e l'aria sopra, chiamata il flusso di calore sensibile. Gli scintillometri a scala interna possono anche misurare la velocità di dissipazione dell'energia kinetica turbolenta e il flusso di moto.
