Il serotipo o il serovar si riferisce a variazioni distinte all'interno di una specie di batteri o virus o tra cellule immunitarie di individui diversi. Questi microrganismi, virus o cellule sono classificati insieme in base ai loro antigeni della superficie cellulare, consentendo la classificazione epidemiologica degli organismi al livello della sotto-specie. Un gruppo di serovari con antigeni comuni è chiamato un serogroup. La serotyping svolge spesso un ruolo essenziale nella determinazione delle specie e delle sottospecie. Il genere Salmonella di batteri, per esempio, è stato determinato ad avere oltre 4400 tipi di serotipi, tra cui il Typhimurium di Salmonella enterica, il serovar Typhi di S. enterica e la S. enterica serovar Dublino. Vibrio cholerae, la specie di batteri che causa il colera, ha oltre 200 serotipi, basati sugli antigeni delle cellule. Solo due di essi sono stati osservati per produrre la potente enterotossina che produce il colera: 0: 1 e 0: 139. I serotipi sono stati scoperti dal microbiologo americano Rebecca Lancefield nel 1933.
