I Sette Sleepers di Efeso erano un gruppo di giovani cristiani che si nascondevano all'interno di una grotta fuori dalla città di Efeso intorno al 250 dC, per sfuggire a una persecuzione dei cristiani condotta durante il regno dell'imperatore romano Decius. Un'altra versione è che Decius li ha ordinati imprigionati in una grotta chiusa per morire come punizione per essere cristiani. Dopo aver addormentato all'interno della grotta, si sono svegliati circa 180 anni dopo durante il regno di Teodosio II, dopo di che sono stati riferiti dai popoli della città ormai cristiana prima di morire. La prima versione di questa storia proviene dal vescovo siriano di Giacobbe di Sarug, che è di per sé derivato da una fonte greca precedente, ora persa. Una descrizione di questo racconto appare in Gregory of Tours e in Paul the Deacon's History of the Longobards. La versione più conosciuta occidentale della storia appare nella leggenda d'oro di Jacobus de Voragine.
