Pronomi per genere e neutri per genere
Un pronome specifico di genere è un pronome associato a un particolare genere, come un pronome che indica la femmina o il maschio. Tra gli esempi figurano i pronomi personali inglesi di lui e di lei. Un pronome neutro, invece, è un pronome che non è associato a un particolare genere, e ciò non implica maschio o femmina. Molti pronomi inglesi sono neutrali di genere, inclusi quelli. Molte delle lingue del mondo non dispongono di pronomi specifiche di genere. Altri, tuttavia - in particolare quelli che hanno un sistema pervasivo di genere grammaticale - hanno specificità di genere in alcuni dei loro pronomi, in particolare pronomi personali della terza persona. Problemi di utilizzo si verificano in lingue come l'inglese, in contesti in cui si riferisce una persona di sesso non specificato o sconosciuto, ma i pronomi più naturali disponibili sono di genere specifico.
