San Pietro, noto anche come Simon Pietro, secondo il Nuovo Testamento, era uno dei Dodici Apostoli di Gesù Cristo, leader della Chiesa antica cristiana. Venerato come santo, è anche il primo vescovo, e considerato il primo Papa dalla Chiesa Cattolica Romana. Il Nuovo Testamento indica che Pietro era il figlio di Giovanni e fu dal villaggio di Betsaida in provincia di Galilea o Gaulanite. Anche suo fratello Sant'Andrea era un apostolo. Secondo i resoconti del Nuovo Testamento, Pietro fu uno dei dodici apostoli scelti da Gesù dai suoi primi discepoli. Originariamente un pescatore, ha svolto un ruolo di leadership ed è stato con Gesù durante gli eventi testimoni da solo alcuni apostoli, come la Trasfigurazione. Secondo i vangeli, Pietro confessò Gesù come Messia, faceva parte del cerchio interno di Gesù, tre volte negò Gesù e predicò il giorno della Pentecoste. Secondo la tradizione cristiana, Pietro fu crocifisso a Roma sotto l'imperatore Nero Augusto Cesare. Tradizionalmente si sostiene che egli è stato crocifisso capovolto su sua propria richiesta, visto che egli stesso non era degno di essere crocifisso allo stesso modo di Gesù Cristo.
