Una zona di salto, chiamata anche zona silenziosa o zona di silenzio, è una regione in cui non è possibile ricevere una trasmissione radio tra le regioni più vicine e più lontane dal trasmettitore dove è possibile ricezione. Quando si usano telecomunicazioni radio a media oa alta frequenza, ci sono onde radio che si muovono in parallelo con il suolo e verso la ionosfera, denominate rispettivamente come onde di massa e onda a cielo. Una zona di salto è una regione anulare tra i punti più lontani in cui è possibile ricevere l'onda di terra e il punto più vicino in cui le onde refrattarie del cielo possono essere ricevute. All'interno di questa regione non è possibile ricevere alcun segnale perché, a causa delle condizioni effettive della ionosfera locale, le onde del cielo rilevanti non si riflettono ma penetrano nella ionosfera. La zona di salto è un fenomeno naturale che non può essere influenzato da mezzi tecnici. La sua larghezza dipende dall'altezza e dalla forma della ionosfera e, in particolare, dalla densità elettronica massima ionosferica caratterizzata da frequenza critica foF2. Dipende principalmente da questo parametro, essendo più grande per il basso foF2.
