L'effetto Slashdot, noto anche come slashdotting, si verifica quando un sito web popolare si collega ad un sito più piccolo, causando un massiccio aumento del traffico. Questo sovraccarica il sito più piccolo, causandolo a rallentare o addirittura temporaneamente diventare non disponibile. Il nome deriva dall'enorme afflusso di traffico web che potrebbe derivare dal sito di news tecnologia Slashdot che collega ai siti web. Tuttavia il nome è un po 'datato come le folle flash di Slashdot sono state segnalate a diminuire a partire dal 2005 a causa della concorrenza da siti simili. L'effetto è stato associato ad altri siti web o metablogs come Fark, Digg, Drudge Report, Reddit e Twitter, che portano a termini come essere Farked o Drudged, essere sotto l'effetto Reddit o ricevere un "abbraccio di morte" Sito in questione.
