Il socialismo è un sistema sociale ed economico caratterizzato dalla proprietà sociale dei mezzi di produzione e della gestione cooperativa dell'economia, [1] [2] nonché una teoria e un movimento politico che mira alla creazione di un tale sistema [ 3] [4] "Proprietà sociale" può riferirsi a imprese cooperative, proprietà comuni, proprietà statali, proprietà del patrimonio cittadino o qualsiasi combinazione di queste. [5] Ci sono molte varietà di socialismo e non esiste una definizione unica che li incapsula tutti. [6] Esse differiscono dal tipo di proprietà sociale che essi sostengono, dal grado di affidamento sui mercati o dalla pianificazione, sulla gestione della gestione all'interno delle istituzioni produttive e sul ruolo dello Stato nella costruzione del socialismo [7]. Un sistema economico socialista si basa sul precetto organizzativo della produzione per l'uso, ossia la produzione di beni e servizi per soddisfare direttamente la domanda economica ei bisogni umani in cui gli oggetti vengono valutati in base al loro valore d'uso o utilità, invece di essere strutturato sul Accumulo di capitale e produzione per profitto.
