I primi gatti somali appaiono nelle cucciolate di Abissini come gattini dai lunghi capelli. Negli anni '40 un allevatore britannico Janet Robertson esportò alcuni gattini abissini in Australia, Nuova Zelanda e Nord America. I discendenti di questi gatti hanno prodotto occasionalmente gattini con cappotti lunghi o fuzzy. Nel 1963, Mary Mailing, un allevatore proveniente dal Canada, entrò uno in uno show pet locale. Ken McGill, il giudice dello show, ha chiesto uno per scopi di allevamento. Un allevatore americano Abissiniano Evelyn Mague, ha anche ricevuto lunghi capelli dai suoi gatti, che ha chiamato "somali". Don Richings, un altro allevatore canadese, usava gattini da McGill e cominciò a lavorare con Mague. Il primo Somaliano riconosciuto come tale da un'organizzazione fanciullo era Mayling Tutsuta, uno dei gatti di McGill.
