L'uso contemporaneo del termine risale all'evoluzione di esibizioni performative di J. L. Austin e alla sua teoria degli atti di locuzione, di illusione e di perlocuzione. Gli atti di discorso vengono comunemente presi per includere tali atti come promettenti, ordinando, salutando, avvisando, invitando e congratulandosi.
