Milza
La milza è un organo trovato in quasi tutti i vertebrati. Simile alla struttura di un grande linfonodo, agisce principalmente come filtro del sangue. Uno studio pubblicato nel 2009 con i topi ha rilevato che la milza contiene, nella sua riserva, la metà dei monociti del corpo all'interno della polpa rossa. Questi monociti, dopo essere stati trasferiti in tessuto ferito, si trasformano in cellule dendritiche e macrofagi, mentre promuovono la guarigione del tessuto.
