Quando si maturano, alcuni tipi si attaccano alla colonia padre, alcuni cadono in fondo, alcuni contengono spazi d'aria che permettono loro di galleggiare e alcuni rimangono nel cistide del genitore per ricostruire la colonia se muore. I statoblasti possono rimanere in sospeso per periodi notevoli e, mentre i dormienti possono sopravvivere a condizioni dure come il congelamento e l'essiccazione. Possono essere trasportati su lunghe distanze da animali, vegetazione fluttuante, correnti e venti. Quando le condizioni migliorano, le valvole della shell si separano e le cellule dentro si sviluppano in uno zooid che cerca di formare una nuova colonia. Uno studio ha stimato che un gruppo di colonie in una patch di 1 metro quadrato produceva 800.000 statoblasti.
