Nella programmazione del computer, una subroutine è una sequenza di istruzioni del programma che eseguono un'attività specifica, confezionata come unità. Questa unità può quindi essere utilizzata nei programmi ovunque si dovesse eseguire tale particolare compito. I sottoprogrammi possono essere definiti all'interno dei programmi o separatamente nelle librerie che possono essere utilizzate da più programmi. Nei diversi linguaggi di programmazione una subroutine può essere chiamata una procedura, una funzione, una routine, un metodo o un sottoprogramma. A volte viene utilizzato l'unità generatrice di callable termine. Come suggerisce il sottoprogramma di nome, un subroutine si comporta in modo molto simile a quello di un programma di computer utilizzato come passo in un programma più grande o in un altro sottoprogramma. Una sottoprogramma è spesso codificata in modo che possa essere avviata diverse volte e / o da più punti durante un'esecuzione del programma, incluso anche da altre sottoprogrammi, e quindi tornare all'istruzione successiva dopo la chiamata una volta eseguita l'attività del sottoprogramma.
