Sottospecie
Nella classificazione biologica, la sottospecie è un rango tassonomico subordinato alle specie, o un'unità tassonomica in quel rango. Una sottospecie non può essere riconosciuta in isolamento: una specie sarà riconosciuta come priva di sottospecie, o due o più, non solo una. Sotto il codice internazionale di nomenclatura zoologica, la sottospecie è l'unico rango tassonomico inferiore a quello delle specie che possono ricevere un nome. Secondo il codice internazionale di nomenclatura per alghe, funghi e piante, possono essere nominati altri ranghi infraspecifici come la varietà. Nella batteriologia, ci sono raccomandazioni, ma non requisiti rigorosi per riconoscere altri importanti ranghi infraspecifici. Un taxonomist decide se riconoscere la sottospecie o no. Un modo comune di decidere è che gli organismi appartenenti a sottospecie diverse della stessa specie siano capaci di intercettare e produrre figli fertili, ma non si intrecciano in natura a causa dell'isolamento geografico o di altri fattori. Le differenze tra sottospecie sono di solito meno distinte rispetto alle differenze tra le specie.
