Nella biologia, un taxon è un gruppo di una o più popolazioni di un organismo o di organismi visti dai taxonomisti per formare un'unità. Anche se non è richiesto, un taxon è di solito conosciuto da un nome particolare e dato una particolare classificazione, soprattutto se e quando viene accettata o stabilita. Tuttavia, non è raro che i taxonomisti restino in disaccordo su quello che appartiene a un taxon e ai criteri utilizzati per l'inclusione. Se un taxon è dato un nome scientifico formale, il suo utilizzo è poi governato da uno dei codici di nomenclatura che specifica quale nome scientifico è corretto per un particolare gruppo. Anche se preceduto dal sistema fiorale di Linnaeus in Systema Naturae e in opere inedite da Bernard e Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, la nozione di un "sistema naturale" basato sulla unità di classificazione biologica è stata resa diffusa nel 1805 attraverso la pubblicazione come introduzione Alla terza edizione di Flore française di Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, dei Principes élémentaires de botanique di Augustin Pyramus de Candolle, un'esposizione di un sistema per la "classificazione naturale" delle piante.
