I sunbirds e spiderhunters costituiscono una famiglia, Nectariniidae, di piccoli uccelli passerini. Ci sono 132 specie in 15 generi. La famiglia è distribuita in tutta l'Africa, il Subcontinente Indiano, Sud-Est asiatico e raggiunge solo l'Australia settentrionale. La maggior parte dei sunbird si nutrono in gran parte del nettare, ma anche degli insetti e dei ragni, specialmente quando si nutrono di giovani. I tubi di fiori che bloccano l'accesso al nettare a causa della loro forma, sono semplicemente forato alla base vicino ai nettari. La frutta è anche parte della dieta di alcune specie. Il loro volo è veloce e diretto sulle ali corte. I sunbird hanno contatti in due gruppi molto distanti: i colibrì delle Americhe e gli honeyeaters dell'Australia. Le somiglianze sono dovute all'evoluzione convergente provocata da un simile stile di vita alimentare di nettare. Alcune specie di sunbird possono assumere il nettare sporgendo come un colibrì, ma di solito perchè mangiare.
