Superconduttività
La superconduttività è un fenomeno di esattamente zero resistenza elettrica ed espulsione di campi magnetici che si verificano in certi materiali quando sono raffreddati sotto una caratteristica temperatura critica. È stato scoperto dal fisico olandese Heike Kamerlingh Onnes l'8 aprile 1911 a Leiden. Come ferromagnetismo e linee spettrali atomiche, la superconduttività è un fenomeno meccanico quantistico. È caratterizzato dall'effetto Meissner, l'espulsione completa delle linee del campo magnetico dall'interno del superconduttore in quanto si trasforma nello stato superconduttivo. Il verificarsi dell'effetto Meissner indica che la superconduttività non può essere intesa semplicemente come l'idealizzazione della perfetta conducibilità nella fisica classica. La resistenza elettrica di un conduttore metallico diminuisce gradualmente quando la temperatura viene abbassata. Nei conduttori ordinari, come il rame o l'argento, questa diminuzione è limitata da impurità e altri difetti. Anche vicino allo zero assoluto, un vero e proprio campione di un conduttore normale mostra una certa resistenza. In un superconduttore, la resistenza scende bruscamente a zero quando il materiale viene raffreddato al di sotto della sua temperatura critica.
