In un sistema di alimentazione elettrica, un quadro è la combinazione di interruttori di scollegamento elettrico, fusibili o interruttori utilizzati per il controllo, la protezione e l'isolamento di apparecchiature elettriche. L'apparecchiatura dotata di olio ha permesso l'energia dell'arco essere contenuta e controllata in modo sicuro. All'inizio del XX secolo, una linea di distribuzione di apparecchiature sarebbe stata una struttura metallica chiusa con elementi di commutazione azionati elettricamente, utilizzando interruttori automatici di olio. Oggi, l'apparecchiatura piena di petrolio è stata sostanzialmente sostituita da apparecchiature ad aria compressa, vuoto o SF6 che consentono di controllare in modo sicuro le grandi correnti e livelli di potenza mediante apparecchiature automatiche che incorporano controlli digitali, protezione, misurazioni e comunicazioni.
