Nella sua prima forma, definita da Aristotele, dalla combinazione di una dichiarazione generale e di una specifica affermazione si deduce una conclusione. Per esempio, sapendo che tutti gli uomini sono mortali e che Socrate è un uomo, possiamo validamente concludere che Socrate è mortale. Gli argomenti sillogistici sono di solito rappresentati in forma a tre righe: Tutti gli uomini sono mortali. Socrate è un uomo. Pertanto, Socrate è mortale. La prima definizione di sillogismo nel dizionario è una deduzione deduttiva consistente in due premesse e una conclusione, che sono tutte proposizioni categoriali. L'argomento della conclusione è il termine minore e il suo predicato il termine principale; il termine medio si verifica in entrambi i locali, ma non nella conclusione.
