Desensibilizzazione sistematica
La desensibilizzazione sistematica, nota anche come terapia di esposizione graduata, è un tipo di terapia comportamentale utilizzata nel campo della psicologia per aiutare efficacemente a superare le fobie e altri disturbi d'ansia. Più in particolare, è una forma di contromisure, un tipo di terapia Pavloviana sviluppata da uno psichiatra sudafricano, Joseph Wolpe. Negli anni '50, Wolpe scoprì che i gatti della Wits University potevano superare le loro paure attraverso l'esposizione graduale e sistematica. Il processo di desensibilizzazione sistematica avviene in tre fasi. Il primo passo della desensibilizzazione sistematica è l'identificazione di una gerarchia di stimolo che induce l'ansia. Il secondo passo è l'apprendimento di tecniche di rilassamento o di coping. Una volta che l'individuo è stato insegnato a queste abilità, deve usarle nel terzo passaggio per reagire e superare situazioni nella gerarchia stabilita delle paure. L'obiettivo di questo processo è che l'individuo sappia imparare ad affrontare e superare la paura in ogni fase della gerarchia.
