Nei sistemi di voto i voti tattici si verificano, nelle elezioni con più di due candidati, quando un elettore supporta un candidato diverso dalla sua preferenza sincera per evitare un risultato indesiderato. È stato dimostrato dal teorema Gibbard-Satterthwaite che, se un metodo di voto per scegliere una di più opzioni è totalmente privo di strategia, allora deve essere dittatoriale o non deterministico. Ad esempio, il metodo di votazione casuale di voto, che seleziona casualmente il voto di un singolo elettore e lo usa per determinare l'esito, è privo di strategia, ma può comportare scelte diverse se vengono applicate più volte alla stessa serie di votazioni.
