Gli Atti di Prova erano una serie di leggi penali penitenziali inglese che servivano come test religiose per l'ufficio pubblico e imponevano varie disabilità civili nei confronti dei cattolici e dei non conformisti romani. Il principio era che nessuno, ma la gente che professava la Chiesa stabilita, era idonea all'occupazione pubblica e le severe sanzioni pronunciate contro i recusenti, sia cattolici che non conformisti, erano affermazioni di questo principio. In pratica, i nonconformisti sono stati spesso esentati da alcune di queste leggi attraverso il normale passaggio degli atti di indennizzo.

La definizione di Test Act nel dizionario è una legge approvata nel 1673 in Inghilterra per escludere i cattolici dalla vita pubblica richiedendo a tutte le persone che ricoprono cariche sotto la corona, come gli ufficiali dell'esercito, di prendere la Comunione anglicana e compiere altri atti proibiti a un cattolico : abrogato nel 1828.
