Il tetrahydrocannabinolo (THC), o più precisamente il suo isomero principale (-) - trans-9-tetraidrocannabinolo ((6aR, 10aR) -delta-9-tetraidrocannabinolo) è il principale componente psicoattivo (o cannabinoide) della pianta della cannabis. Prima isolata nel 1964, in forma pura, dagli scienziati israeliani Raphael Mechoulam e Yechiel Gaoni presso l'Istituto di Scienze Weizmann, è un solido vetroso traspirante quando il freddo diventa viscoso e appiccicoso se riscaldato. Una formulazione farmaceutica del (-) - trans-Δ9-tetraidrocannabinolo, noto per il suo dronabinolo INN, è disponibile a prescrizione negli Stati Uniti e in Canada sotto il marchio Marinol. Un terpenoide aromatico, THC ha una bassa solubilità nell'acqua, ma una buona solubilità nella maggior parte dei solventi organici, in particolare lipidi e alcoli. Come la maggior parte dei metaboliti secondari farmacologicamente attivi delle piante, la THC in cannabis è presumibilmente coinvolta in autodifesa, forse contro gli erbivori. THC possiede anche elevate proprietà di assorbimento UV-B (280-315 nm), che, è stato ipotizzato, potrebbero proteggere l'impianto dall'esposizione nociva alla radiazione UV.
