Theseus / θiːsiːəs / era il mitico fondatore-re di Atene ed era figlio di Aethra da due padri: Aegeus e Poseidone. Teseo era un eroe fondatore, come Perseo, Cadmo o Heracles, tutti combattuti e superati di nemici identificati con un arcaico ordine religioso e sociale. Mentre Heracles era l'eroe doriano, Teseo era un eroe fondatore, ritenuto dagli ateniesi come loro grande riformatore: il suo nome deriva dalla stessa radice di θεσμός, greca per "The Gathering". Egli era responsabile degli synoikismos - l'unificazione politica dell'Attica sotto Atene, rappresentata emblematicamente nel suo cammino di fatiche, sottomessa ogre e bestie mostruose. Poiché era il re unificante, Teseo costruì e occupava un palazzo sulla fortezza dell'Acropoli che potrebbe essere simile al palazzo scavato in Mycenae. Pausanias riferisce che dopo gli synoikismos, Teseo ha stabilito un culto di Afrodite Pandemos e Peitho sul versante meridionale dell'Acropoli.
