Timo
Il timo è un organo specializzato del sistema immunitario. All'interno del timo, le cellule T, critiche per il sistema immunitario adattivo, maturano. Ogni cellula T attacca una sostanza estranea che identifica con il suo recettore. Le cellule T presentano recettori che vengono generati dai segmenti genetici a catena casuale. Ogni cellula T attacca un antigene diverso. Le cellule T che attaccano le proteine del corpo vengono eliminate nel timo. Le cellule epiteliali timiche esprimono proteine importanti da altrove nel corpo. In primo luogo, le cellule T subiscono una "selezione positiva" per cui la cellula entra in contatto con l'auto-MHC espresso da cellule epiteliali timiche; Coloro che non hanno interazione sono distrutti. In secondo luogo, la cellula T subisce una "selezione negativa" interagendo con la cellula dendritica tricica, per cui le cellule T con elevata interazione di affinità vengono eliminate attraverso l'apoptosi e quelli con l'affinità intermedia sopravvivono. Il timo è composto da due lobi identici e si trova anatomicamente nel mediastinum superiore anteriore, davanti al cuore e dietro lo sterno. Istologicamente, ogni lobo del timo può essere diviso in una medulla centrale e una corteccia periferica che è circondata da una capsula esterna.
