Le transferrine sono glicoproteine ematiche che controllano il livello ferro libero nei fluidi biologici. Il transferrin umano è codificato dal gene TF. Le glicoproteine di transferrin legano ferro molto strettamente, ma in modo reversibile. Anche se il ferro legato al transferrino è inferiore allo 0,1% del ferro totale del corpo, è il più importante vaso di ferro, con il più alto tasso di fatturato. Il transferrin ha un peso molecolare di circa 80 KDa e contiene due siti specifici di legame ad alta affinità Fe. L'affinità del transferrin per Fe è estremamente elevata ma diminuisce progressivamente con un pH diminuente sotto la neutralità. Quando non è legato al ferro, è conosciuto come "apotransferrin".
