Una corrente di torbidità è una corrente di acqua rapidamente in movimento, carico di sedimenti, che si muove lungo un pendio attraverso l'acqua o un altro fluido. La corrente si muove perché ha una densità più alta del fluido attraverso il quale scorre: la forza motrice di una corrente di torbidità deriva dal suo sedimento, che rende l'acqua torbida più densa dell'acqua limpida sopra. Il deposito di una corrente di torbidità è chiamato turbidite. Le correnti di torbidità sono un esempio di correnti di densità o di gravità, che includono: fronti oceanici, valanghe, lahars, flussi piroclastici e flussi di lava. Le correnti di torbidità del mare sono comunemente utilizzate per descrivere le correnti subacquee nei laghi e negli oceani, che di solito sono innescati da terremoti, fiumi sconnessi e sedimentali. Sono caratterizzati da un frontale ben definito, noto anche come testa, seguito da uno strato noto come corpo della corrente. Le correnti di torbidità sono caratteristiche di aree in cui vi è instabilità sismica e pendenza subacquea, soprattutto pendii sottomarini di trincea di margini pianeggianti convergenti, pendii continentali e canyon sottomarini di margini passivi.
