Il concetto di universalizzabilità è stato definito dal filosofo tedesco del XVIII secolo Immanuel Kant come parte del suo lavoro Fondamento del Metafisico dei Morali. Fa parte della prima formulazione del suo imperativo categorico, che afferma che le sole massime moralmente accettabili delle nostre azioni sono quelle che possono essere razionalmente volute per essere il diritto universale. Il significato preciso di universalizability è controversa, ma l'interpretazione più comune è che l'imperativo categorico chiede se la massima delle tue azioni potrebbe diventare quella che tutti potrebbero agire in circostanze simili. Se l'azione potrebbe essere universalizzata, allora è moralmente accettabile. Altrimenti non lo è. Ad esempio, si può determinare se una mistica di mentire a prestare un prestito è morale cercando di universalizzarla e di applicare la ragione ai risultati. Se tutti mentirono a prestare prestiti, le pratiche di promessa e di prestito sarebbero cadute, e la massima sarebbe diventata impossibile. Kant chiama tali atti esempi di una contraddizione nella concezione, che è molto simile a una contraddizione performativa, perché minano la base stessa della loro esistenza.
