L'instabilità è la pratica di ostrazizzare un gruppo separandoli dalla corrente principale dal mandato sociale o legale. Il gruppo escluso potrebbe essere quello che non ha accettato le norme del gruppo escluso e ha incluso storicamente stranieri, tribù nomadi, disgregatori e criminali e coloro che soffrono di una malattia contagiosa. Potrebbe anche essere un gruppo che non ha accettato il cambiamento di dogane applicato da un determinato gruppo. Questa esclusione è stata un metodo per punire gli interruttori di legge e anche proteggere le società tradizionali contro il contagio da estranei e infetti. Un membro del gruppo escluso è conosciuto come untouchable. Il termine è comunemente associato al trattamento delle comunità Dalit, considerate "inquinanti" tra i popoli dell'Asia meridionale, ma il termine è stato utilizzato anche per altri gruppi, come il Burakumin del Giappone, i Cagot in Europa o il Al-Akhdam in Yemen. L'intaccabilità è stata fatta illegale nell'India dopo l'indipendenza e i Dalits sostanzialmente potenziati, anche se alcuni pregiudizi contro di loro continuano, soprattutto nelle tasche rurali dominate da alcuni altri gruppi di caste arretrate.
