Una funzione d'onda o una funzione d'onda nella meccanica quantistica descrive lo stato quantistico di un sistema di una o più particelle e contiene tutte le informazioni sul sistema. Le quantità associate alle misurazioni, come il momento medio di una particella, sono derivate dalla funzione d'onda. Così è una quantità centrale nella meccanica quantistica. I simboli più comuni per una funzione d'onda sono le lettere greche ψ o Ψ. L'equazione di Schrödinger determina come la funzione d'onda si evolve nel tempo, cioè la funzione d'onda è la soluzione dell'equazione Schrödinger. La funzione d'onda si comporta qualitativamente come altre onde, come onde d'acqua o onde su una stringa, perché l'equazione di Schrödinger è matematicamente un tipo di equazione d'onda. Questo spiega il nome "funzione d'onda" e genera dualità delle particelle d'onda. La funzione d'onda per un dato sistema non ha una rappresentazione univoca. Più comunemente, è presa per essere una funzione di tutte le coordinate di posizione delle particelle e del tempo, cioè la funzione d'onda è in "spazio di posizione".
