Insieme alla gru Sandhill, è una delle sole due specie di gru trovate in Nord America. La durata della gru di Whooping è stimata da 22 a 24 anni in natura. Dopo essere stato spinto all'orlo dell'estinzione dalla caccia non regolamentata e dalla perdita di habitat a soli 21 selvaggina e due gru di Whooping nel 1941, gli sforzi di conservazione hanno portato ad un recupero limitato. A partire dal 2011 ci sono circa 437 uccelli in selvaggina e più di 165 in cattività.
