Un sistema di coordinate cartesiane è un sistema di coordinate che specifica ogni punto in modo univoco in un piano da una coppia di coordinate numeriche, che sono le distanze sottoscritte dal punto a due righe fissi perpendicolari, misurate nella stessa unità di lunghezza. Ogni linea di riferimento è chiamata asse di coordinate o solo asse del sistema e il punto in cui incontrano è la sua origine, di solito a coppia ordinata. Le coordinate possono anche essere definite come le posizioni delle proiezioni perpendicolari del punto sui due assi, espressi come distanze sottoscritte dall'origine.
