La cristallografia a raggi X è uno strumento utilizzato per identificare la struttura atomica e molecolare di un cristallo in cui gli atomi cristallini causano un fascio di raggi X incidenti a diffondere in molte direzioni specifiche. Misurando gli angoli e le intensità di questi fasci diffusi, un cristallografo può produrre un quadro tridimensionale della densità degli elettroni all'interno del cristallo. Da questa densità di elettroni possono essere determinate le posizioni medie degli atomi nel cristallo, così come i loro legami chimici, il loro disturbo e varie altre informazioni. Poiché molti materiali possono formare cristalli come sali, metalli, minerali, semiconduttori, così come varie molecole inorganiche, organiche e biologiche, la cristallografia a raggi X è stata fondamentale nello sviluppo di molti campi scientifici. Nei suoi primi decenni di utilizzo, questo metodo ha determinato la dimensione degli atomi, le lunghezze ei tipi di legami chimici e le differenze di scala atomica tra vari materiali, in particolare minerali e leghe. Il metodo ha anche rivelato la struttura e la funzione di molte molecole biologiche, incluse le vitamine, i farmaci, le proteine e gli acidi nucleici come il DNA.
