Xerografia
Xerografia è una tecnica di fotocopia secca inventata da Chester Carlson nel 1938, per il quale è stato aggiudicato il brevetto statunitense 2.297.691 il 6 ottobre 1942. Carlson originariamente chiamato la sua invenzione elettrofotografia. Successivamente è stata rinominata la xerografia - dalle radici greche ξηρός xeros "dry" e "γραφία -graphia" scrivendo "per sottolineare che, a differenza delle tecniche di riproduzione allora in uso come il cyanotipo, questo processo non usava sostanze chimiche liquide. L'innovazione di Carlson ha combinato la stampa elettrostatica con la fotografia, a differenza del processo di stampa a secco elettrostatico inventato da Georg Christoph Lichtenberg nel 1778. Il processo originale di Carlson era ingombrante, richiedendo diversi passaggi manuali di lavorazione con piatti piatti. Fu quasi 18 anni prima che venisse sviluppato un processo completamente automatizzato, il passaggio chiave che era l'utilizzo di un tamburo cilindrico rivestito di selenio invece di una piastra piatta. Ciò ha portato alla prima copiatrice automatica commerciale, Xerox 914, rilasciata da Haloid / Xerox nel 1960.
