L'opossum dell'acqua, anche localmente noto come yapok / jæpɒk /, è un marsupio della famiglia Didelphidae. È l'unico membro del suo genere, Chironectes. Questa creatura semiaquatica si trova in e nei pressi dei flussi e dei laghi di acqua dolce in Messico, America Centrale e Sud dell'Argentina ed è il marsupiale vivente più acquatico. È anche l'unica marsupiale vivente in cui entrambi i sessi hanno un sacchetto. La thylacina, comunemente indicata come la tigre della Tasmania, ha anche esibito questo carattere, ma ora è creduto essere estinto. L'animale vive in caverne di banchi, che emergono dopo il tramonto per nuotare e cercare pesce, crostacei e altri animali acquatici, che mangia sulla banca.
