Modulo di Young
Il modulo di Young, noto anche come modulo di trazione o modulo elastico, è una misura della rigidità di un materiale isotropico elastico ed è una quantità utilizzata per caratterizzare i materiali. Viene definito come rapporto tra lo sforzo lungo un asse sul ceppo lungo tale asse nella gamma di stress in cui è in possesso la legge di Hooke. In meccanica solida, il pendio della curva di stress-tensione in qualsiasi punto è chiamato modulo tangente. Il modulo tangente della parte iniziale e lineare di una curva di stress-tensione è chiamato modulo Young. Può essere determinato sperimentalmente dal pendio di una curva di stress-strain creata durante le prove di trazione condotte su un campione del materiale. In alcuni materiali, il modulo di Young può avere valori diversi a seconda della direzione della forza applicata rispetto alla struttura del materiale. Il modulo di Young è il modulo elastico più comune, talvolta chiamato modulo di elasticità, ma sono anche misurati altri moduli elastici, come il modulo di bulk e il modulo di taglio. È il nome di uno scienziato inglese ottocentesco Thomas Young.
