Yttrium è un elemento chimico con simbolo Y e numero atomico 39. È un metallo di transizione argentato metallico chimicamente simile ai lanthanidi ed è stato spesso classificato come "elemento di terra rara". L'ittrio è quasi sempre trovato combinato con i lanthanidi in minerali rari e non è mai trovato nella natura come elemento libero. L'unico isotopo stabile, 89Y, è anche il suo unico isotopo naturale. Nel 1787 Carl Axel Arrhenius trovò un nuovo minerale vicino a Ytterby in Svezia e lo chiamò ytterbite, dopo il villaggio. Johan Gadolin ha scoperto l'ossido di ittrio nel campione di Arrhenius nel 1789, e Anders Gustaf Ekeberg ha chiamato il nuovo ossido di yttria. Yttrium elementare è stato prima isolato nel 1828 da Friedrich Wöhler. L'uso più importante di ittrio è quello di realizzare fosfori, come quelli rossi utilizzati nei televisori a tubo catodico e nei LED.
