Fusione di zona
La fusione in zona è un gruppo di metodi simili di purificazione di cristalli, in cui una fusione stretta di un cristallo viene fusa, e questa zona fusa viene spostata lungo il cristallo. La regione fusa scioglie il solido impuro al suo bordo anteriore e lascia una scia di materiale più puro solidificato dietro di essa mentre si muove attraverso il lingotto. Le impurità si concentrano nella fusione e vengono spostate ad una estremità del lingotto. La raffinazione delle zone è stata sviluppata da William Gardner Pfann in Bell Labs come metodo per preparare materiali di alta purezza per la produzione di transistori. Il suo impiego precoce è stato per il germanio a questo scopo, ma può essere esteso a qualsiasi sistema solvente-solvente avente una differenza di concentrazione notevole tra le fasi solide e liquide all'equilibrio. Questo processo è noto anche come processo di zona float, in particolare nel processo di lavorazione dei semiconduttori.
