कारण पृथ्वी का ऊपरी भाग भी हिलने या काँपने लगता है । इसी को भूकंप कहते हैं । कभी तो इस कंप का मान
इतना सुक्ष्म होता है कि साधारणतः हम लोगों को बिना
यत्रों की सहायता के उसका ज्ञान भी नहीं होता, और कभी
इतना भीषण होता है कि उसके कारण पृथ्वी में बड़ी बड़ी
दरारें पड़ जाती हैं, बड़ी बड़ी इमारतें गिर जाती है और
यहाँ तक कि कभी कभी जल के स्थान में स्थल और स्थल के
