La fibra di bozzolo del baco da seta è ricoperta da tre strati di sericina in due strati di fibroina, la sensazione ruvida e dura della seta e della seta è attaccata alla sericina e, una volta raffinata, si scioglie e diventa una trama unica di seta. Il colore della fibra del baco da seta è determinato dal colorante carotenoide contenuto nella sericina e la composizione di amminoacidi della sericina è notevolmente ricca in serina.
